Ten Commandments- One, ink and acrylic on mylar, 15.25 x 10 inches

Ten Commandments 1990–1994

The original Ten Commandments paintings were studies for the Exodus II sculpture pieces. Wardlaw “has inscribed pictorial motifs onto the surfaces of each object. But, as the preparatory paintings on mylar indicate, he has effaced or dissolved each of those symbolic images so that it becomes physically and metaphorically embedded, and obscure within the matrix of paint.” The works presented here were a continuation of paintings from the sculpture. The symbolic imagery in this later series tends to be somewhat less obscure, and more in focus.
